Your contributions help challenge Anti-Black Erasure
I remember helping my late aunt prepare for rent parties as a teen in Brooklyn, New York. She was well loved for her hospitality and cooking skills - and she said I was a good helper. Soul food, gambling, adult beverages, and R&B music - entry prices varied depending on what was on offer.
Although I had enjoyed re-watching "The Rent Party" (1976) episode of Good Times on television, I didn't begin to learn about and comprehend the history of Black people using gathering as a form of Black Liberation until I was well into adulthood. Mutual aid and cooperative economics have always been critical components of how we made it over.
Social Whists, Waistline Parties, Juke Joints, Buffet Flats, Block Parties, etc. Despite Anti-Black policies and practices, Black people in America created and developed a unique culture of gathering that continues to inspire - as demonstrated by the success of the film "Sinners" (2025).
I’m asking for your help now. Your contributions directly aid me in continuing to confront and challenge Anti-Black Erasure and uplift Black heritage.
